All things change but some things stay the same

The pace of change in our society is phenomenal. If we think back over the last year we can probably identify at least 10 things that have changed or evolved. Some of these changes are radical and others simple improvements, yet each is taking us to a new innovation or shift in our view of the world.

However some things remain fundamental notwithstanding these shifts. We all need to communicate, be entertained, feel connected or worthy, get out and about and make a contribution to our community.

For something to make an impact and affect peoples lives the change doesn’t need to be big. Often small and unexpected change can have a profound effect.

We hear about the need for innovation and transformation in business everyday, or at least it seems like this to me. People are looking for the next ‘big idea’ that will shakeup business and industry.

Do untapped bright ideas = a market opportunity?

The rise of the ‘entrepreneur’ as an aspirational goal has spawned many fanciful ideas into products or services. But not every idea is necessarily ‘sellable’ or needed, no matter that it is imaginative and new.

When surfing the internet I found one example which seemed to give credence to my view. Mosquito netting socks were showcased on swissmiss.com as a product “the world doesn’t need”.

Well apparently at $19.95 US we need them, and whats more can buy them, along with an extended range of other ‘mosquito’ protective clothing.

Don’t squander opportunities offered to you by your staff. Staff suggestions can deliver real rewards to your business but so often we squander the opportunities offered to us.

Not convinced, here is one example that might change your mind on the value of listening to your staff.


One company that listened was Swan Vesta (a matchbox manufacturer) who saved thousands of pounds by following the suggestion of one of their factory workers.

The suggestion – to put sandpaper on only one side of each matchbox. A simple but effective suggestion which reaped rewards from harnessing the ideas of one of their staff members.
